Pokémon Go was easily the biggest smartphone game of the year – but since it launched in the summer, the number of players has fallen steadily.
In an effort to coax the “trainers” back, developer Niantic Labs has lined up a special Christmas promotion that’ll reward players for getting back into the game.
Similar to events run during Thanksgiving and Halloween, there will be a number of changes to the game for a period of time over the holidays.
First and foremost, the game will double the amount of XP you receive for catching and evolving the creatures, or defeating them at the gym.
So, at the very least, you’ll be able to level up your avatar if you’ve left it languishing in the lower levels since the dog days of summer.
Here are a few other tips and tricks to make the most of the Pokémon Go Christmas event.
Catch everything you can
It’s a pretty obvious place to start, but there’s a reason behind it. The latest update to the game allows you to transfer multiple Pokémon at once to the Professor. That’s a huge time-saver when it comes to acquiring those candies.
All you have to do is press and hold a Pokémon to highlight it, then select any others you want to transfer at once.
And who knows, you might even catch Ditto .
Catching Pokémon is all well and good, but you’ll have to find them first.
Niantic recently updated the “Nearby” feature, which appears in the small window on the bottom right of the game screen and shows which critters are hanging around nearby Pokéstops.
A set of footprints also lets you know how close they are.
You can combine this with the Silph Road’s global atlas of Pokémon Go nests to help find elusive creatures. Just make sure you wrap up warm before heading out.
Pokemon update brings back a much-loved feature
If you’re not up-to-speed with all the latest Pokémon creatures, then you may be surprised to know that there’s rumoured to be 100 extra characters joining the game in time for the Christmas event.
These come from the generation 2 games and will allow you to greatly expand your roster.
But moreover, it’ll allow you to evolve some old favourites even further. Eevee, for example, will get two more evolutions if this rumour proves true. There will also be the option to further evolve Slowpoke, Zubat and Seadra.
You can see the full list over on Gamenguide – but we’d recommend you get started on catching these specific Pokémon now to get a headstart on evolving to those extra levels.
