Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan said that he loves the Nintendo Switch, and while porting the game would be a challenge, the company is open minded about new platforms.
“I’m loving the Switch!” Kaplan told users on Reddit. “My second favourite gaming platform of all time is the 3DS.
“Getting OW on the Switch is very challenging for us. But we’re always open minded about exploring possible platforms.”
While it’s by no means confirmation, the fact that Blizzard is even considering an Overwatch port is good news for the Nintendo Switch.
The new Nintendo console has already sold more than 1.5 million units, and is on track to hit 2 million by the end of March.
It’s also good news for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is believed to have sold around 1.3 million copies. This means that almost 90% of Switch owners have picked up a copy.
It’s already Nintendo’s fastest-selling console in certain regions, although long-term success will depend on the frequency and quality of new releases.
A game like Overwatch would certainly help.
And speaking of Overwatch, a brand new hero is scheduled to launch on PS4, Xbox One and PC next week.
The new Tank-class fighter been on the PTR longer than usual, as Blizzard continues to make balancing tweaks.
Game director Jeff Kaplan revealed more on the Overwatch blog: “we’re leaving Orisa on the PTR for a little while. We’re getting great feedback and fixing a lot of issues.
“I know this feels a little longer than other PTR periods, but we think it will be for the better.”
