Square Enix’s Hajime Tabata has said that development of the PC version of Final Fantasy XV is much, much easier than that of the console edition.
Speaking to MCV, the game director said that the console version was 100 times more difficult to make than the PC version. The team began working on the PC SKU earlier this year, saying it will boast improved graphics and support for 8K resolution.
“The console version, which required reconstruction from the very start for both the game itself and the engine, was more than 100 times more difficult,” Tabata said.
Furthermore, the challenge for Square Enix is apparently not trying to get the game running on hi-spec rigs, but rather hardware with lower specifications.
“In entering the global PC market, it’s a requirement that games can be played on a wide range of specs,” Tabata said.
“At this stage, FFXV is at the high end of these settings, and we are in the process of seeing how well we can push things out on a lower spec.”
These are big words considering that the PC versions of many triple-A console titles face massive issues at launch. Square Enix’s own Nier Automata had myriad problems when it hit Steam earlier this year.
There’s also a first-person mode coming along, which Tabata says is 50 per cent complete.
“We have only reached about 50 per cent [completion] on this mode, but we feel the gameplay has a certain freshness to it and it’s been well-received among those in the development team,” Tabata explained.
“In providing this mode, we needed to make some large adjustments, like the player character’s VFX, displayed animations and camera movement. Even now, we’re still making small, daily adjustments.”
Final Fantasy XV launched on PS4 and Xbox One in late 2017 following nearly a decade of development. The PC version was announced at Gamescom this year with an early 2018 release date in mind.
The game will feature mod support, but Tabata has warned that if users go too far, future Final Fantasy titles might not feature this functionality.
