PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Desert Map Adds a Pickup Truck

The release of the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds desert map is fast approaching, as players will soon be able to win chicken dinners in a brand new location. Ahead of the map’s release, developer Bluehole continues to tease what new gameplay fans can expect from it.

In a post on Twitter, the official PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds account revealed a screenshot of a new vehicle that will be added to the game alongside the desert map. The tweet explains that this pickup truck will be “exclusive to the desert map,” meaning that those playing on the game’s (current, default map) Erangel will have to make do with the vehicles already in the game.

According to the screenshot, the pickup truck’s cab only has room for two players. Though it’s unclear whether two additional players would be able to sit (officially, rather than balance) in the bed of the truck, allowing a full squad of players to get on-board. If all four players fit, it could lead to some frantic and memorable moments. The players in the back would worry about getting picked off by steady-aiming snipers, while the driver would be doing their very best to lead the squad to safety.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds fans will hopefully get some clarification on the truck’s capabilities when the game heads to The Game Awards later this week. The Game Awards creator and host Geoff Keighley has confirmed that new footage of the desert map will be featured during the show. It would make sense if this footage also included a clip of the pickup truck in action.

Fans of the hugely popular battle royale game will also be hoping for an official release date announcement too. Despite Bluehole continuing to tease the desert map, the developer has not yet confirmed when the 1.0 test patch (which includes the new map) will be released.

The replies to the pickup truck screenshot tweet are inundated with fans asking the same question – ‘when can we play it?’ – but the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds account only promises that a release will come “soon.”

In another tweet, the account confirms that the game’s test servers are now offline and that the map will be available in the next round of testing (though no date has been announced for this). Anticipation for the desert map has reached fever pitch, so fingers crossed that Bluehole will put fans out of their misery and provide a release date in the next few days.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will launch for Xbox Game Preview on December 12th, and is currently in early access on PC, with a planned release date of late December.
