It appears that the Gen 3 Legendary Pokemon will likely be launched into the game in a similar fashion to Legendary Raid Pokemon Articuno, Moltres and Zapdos with a new Raid boss every 30 days.
This is as opposed to the Johto Region Legendary Dogs – otherwise known as Raikou, Entei, and Suicune – who were all revealed at the same time and rotated around the world.
We would imagine that following Groudon’s exit, Niantic will release Kyogre and then Rayquaza.
What we do know is that these very rare Pokemon will only be around for a limited time when they’re in the game, so to make the process of battling them as easy as possible, below you’ll find a guide to battling Groudon, with details about his respective weaknesses and the best counters to use in battle.
In addition, we’ve run through Groudon’s IV and best movesets.
Groudon Raid Boss Guide
Groudon is currently available to battle in raids over the Christmas period until January 15 across the world.
The CP for the Groudon raid boss is 51968 and as you might expect it’s not possible to solo the Gen 3 Legendary and we’d advise you take it on with at least 5-6 fellow trainers in order to take it down.
Once captured it can have a maximum capture CP of 2328, at Level 20, with a perfect IV score.
Before any of that though, you’ll need to know how to counter Groudon.
Groudon Raid Counters
Groudon is a pure Ground type Pokemon and as such it has no double weaknesses. Pokemon GO Hub has the following advice on picking Pokemon to counter:
“We are banking on a mix of Solar Beam / Hydro Pump wielders that take normal or reduced damage from Groudon’s moves”
As you’ll see from the above gallery, you’re best taking on Groudon with any Pokemon with access to Solar Beam or Hydro Pump.
Groudon Best Movesets:
As mentioned, Groudon is a pure ground Pokemon and this is also reflected in the move sets, the best of which are marked in bold and italicised below:
• Dragon Tail DRAGON (fast)
• Mud Shot GROUND (fast)
• Earthquake GROUND (1 bar, charged)
• Solar Beam GRASS (1 bar, charged)
• Fire Blast FIRE (1 bar, charged)
Additional Groudon Counters
If you’re not blessed with a lot of the Pokemon mentioned in the above gallery, then there are alternatives to take on Groudon.
These Pokemon are obviously not as capable as those listed in the gallery above, but make decent substitutes as opposed to loading up on higher CP but inappropriate Pokemon such as Blissey or Snorlax.
• Jynx with a good moveset
• Omastar with Water Gun / Hydro Pump
• Feraligatr with Water Gun / Hydro Pump
• Tangela with Vine Whip / Solar Beam
• Victreebel with Solar Beam
• Meganium with Vine Whip / Solar Beam
