Since it launched back in 2016, Overwatch has been constantly evolving due in large part to consistent updates from Blizzard that range from bug fixes and balancing to new heroes. Earlier this month, Blizzard teased a bit of what’s to come for the popular shooter, including the existence of a new hero set to join the constantly expanding roster. Thanks to a new interview, fans now have a bit more information on the 27th hero.
Speaking to Overwatch Central, game director Jeff Kaplan was asked about what kinds of things fans could expect from the yet to be revealed 27th hero. Though development continues to progress, Kaplan expects this new hero to change the meta of Overwatch, that is, force players to rethink and develop new strategies during gameplay. Unfortunately, Kaplan couldn’t (or wouldn’t) share any more details, but his admission does go hand in hand with the recent rumors that the new character would be someone that is sorely needed and potentially more skill based.
Though no release timeframe was provided by Kaplan, he did admit that the new hero is in every one of the developer’s internal playtests and has multiple skins to go along with them. Interestingly enough, Kaplan went on to admit that as time goes on, it becomes more difficult to add new characters to the roster. The main reason for this is due to the fact that more and more content is added to the game, that the new characters are required to have off the bat. One of the examples he gives is with emotes and how at the start of the game, no characters were able to sit. The sit emote has since been added along with the expectation that all characters need to have that.
Following the launch of Moira, the latest character to join the game, Blizzard has been busy preparing new content for players to enjoy. The highly anticipated map Blizzard World is expected to finally release to the public later this month. PC users have been testing this map on the PTR server for a while now which essentially acts as a theme park celebrating all of Blizzard’s IPs while the heroes of Overwatch battle each other. In addition to the new map, new cosmetic items which include Blizzard-themed skins, are also set to be added to the loot pool alongside the update.
